Welcome to the 7th anniversary of the Paterson Poetry Festival!

Let's embark on a journey of words and wonder! The Paterson Poetry Festival offers a unique opportunity for your students to immerse themselves in the world of poetry, ignite their creativity, and discover the power of language to express, inspire, and connect.

Dey Mansion

This year (2024) The Paterson Poetry Festival will be held at Dey Mansion in Wayne, NJ. The mansion is the George Washington headquarters. Visitors can take tours of the mansion and the historic grounds year-round.

Why Visit the Paterson Poetry Festival?

  • Align with NJ State Standards: The festival seamlessly integrates with various New Jersey State Standards, including:
    • Language Arts:
      • Reading: Demonstrate understanding of literary texts from diverse genres and cultures.

What to Expect at the Festival

  • Dynamic Poetry Performances: Be enthralled by talented poets reciting their original works, showcasing the diversity and power of spoken word.
  • Interactive Workshops: Participate in hands-on writing workshops led by experienced poets, where students can explore different poetic forms and techniques.
  • Guided Tours of Dey Mansion: Discover the historical significance of Dey Mansion, a National Historic Landmark, and its connection to the Paterson Silk Mills and the American Revolution.
  • Opportunities for Student Expression: Encourage your students to share their own poetry or participate in open mic sessions, fostering self-confidence and a sense of community.

Planning Your Visit

  • Registration: Reserve your spot for the festival by registering online or contacting the organizers directly by email.
  • Transportation: Arrange transportation for your group. There are designated parking spaces for school buses and vans at a neighboring school parking lot. The Passaic County Sheriff's Department will guide parking.
  • Lunch: Plan for lunch either by packing snacks or utilizing on-site food options. There will be food trucks on site.
  • Student Engagement: Prepare your students for the festival by discussing poetry and its role in society, encouraging them to be active participants and observers. Consider introducing them to New Jersey poets: William Carlos Williams, Maria Mazziotti Gillan, Allen Ginsberg, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Talena Lachelle Queen, and many others.
  • There are several opportunities for open mic. Ask organizers how to be part of the lineup.
